Do you have a passion for plants? Can you contribute to the development of competitive crop varieties in order to provide our Seed Production and Marketing & Sales Teams with the proper products? 

We are looking for an enthusiastic Junior Breeder for lettuce with a strong orientation towards the market. The ideal candidate is an up and coming research professional with the proven ability to connect well with others. 

What are you going to do?

As a Junior Breeder Lettuce, you will contribute to the development of new iceberg lettuce varieties. You will be part of a global team and assist in all breeding activities in the crop. The trials are located in various locations within California and Arizona, so frequent traveling will be part of the job. You will contribute to the development of new iceberg lettuce varieties by being actively involved in the market. You will create breeding objectives based on the latest market developments, linking market needs to breeding goals. You will prepare and execute breeding and screening trials and analyze the resulting data. You will work together in international and multidisciplinary (cross-functional) teams. 

Your power

You are an enthusiastic research professional with an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for plant breeding. You are eager to learn and to develop yourself to become an independent breeder. You are keen on learning the latest market developments and able to translate these to your breeding program, using the latest breeding technologies. In this process, you are able to connect and collaborate effectively with internal and external parties. 

You have excellent analytical and communication skills. Furthermore, you are familiar with novel molecular breeding technologies and you are able to implement these in your breeding program. Additionally, you are not afraid to make decisions and you function well in a global team.

Requirements

  • Master’s or PhD in genetics / plant breeding; 
  • At least 2-3 years work experience in plant breeding; 
  • Prepared to travel frequently, both within the country and abroad; 
  • Results driven and creative breeder with excellent analytical and communication skills; 
  • Excellent command of the English language.
